If you're not in to the scent of pumpkin spice, don't leave! You can make wonderful, Solid Lip Gloss with about 20-30 drops of any of your favorite essential oils!
There's no doubt that a simple combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla and clove, added to pretty much anything, will muster of up memories of fall. And I'm not entirely sure how or why this fall trend of "pumpkin-spicin' up your life" gained so much popularity, but I'm totally on board.
There are the obvious things that you can do with pumpkin spice - add it to lattes, pie, pancakes, and almost any baking. Or, like me, you can add it your cosmetics and breathe in the spicy aroma all day long :) And what better to pumpkin-spice-up then lip balm or gloss? With the change of the season, and your skin and lips screaming out for nourishment, this combo of pumpkin spice and solid lip gloss has never made more sense!
This recipe is one of my favorite DIYs because it's fool-proof and so, so effective. Unlike many store-bought lip balms, which can often leave your lips feeling even more chapped once it wears off, homemade lip balms and glosses, like this one, will give even the most chapped and dried-out lips relief!
What helps to make this pumpkin spice solid lip gloss so lovely, is that it's made with castor oil (62% to be exact), which will leave your lips hydrated and perfectly glossy.
The remaining oils, shea butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E, are highly moisturizing, and nourishing, too. The pumpkin spice scent is achieved using a combination of essential oils - ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and vanilla absolute.
Here is a little more information about your ingredients:Castor Oil (cosmetic grade): This hard and shiny oil can be found in most cosmetics, and acts as a barrier agent and protective medium against harsh conditions and extremes. Very soothing to the skin when included into cosmetic applications. Stores well under most conditions.
Shea Butter: Shea butter is naturally rich in Vitamins A and E as well as essential fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals. It is an intense moisturizer for dry skin, and a wonderful product for revitalizing damaged skin. In addition, Shea butter offers a low level of UV protection (approximately SPF-6).
Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil comes from the beans of a shrub like plant, and it is actually a liquid plant wax. It is bright and golden in color, has a mild odor, and is favored in the carrier oil family because of its advanced molecular stability. It also makes a great scalp cleanser for the hair, and is equally wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are similar to our skins own sebum.
Vitamin E Oil: It is great for preventing rancidity in cosmetics, and it acts as an anti-oxidant in cosmetics.
about 4-6 tins, old lip balm tubes, or even a small jar if you had nothing else on-hand.
I highly recommend investing in a kitchen scale if you don’t already have one. They make life so much easier when making homemade lip balm, salves, body butter, and moisturizer, and give the most consistent and accurate results.
Measure out all of the ingredients, except the essential oils and vitamin E oil, into a glass, jar. Place the jar in a pan of simmering water in order to create a double-boiler effect (don't let any water splash in to the jar)- this will prevent the oils from burning.
Once the oil, butter and wax has become liquid, remove from heat, add the essential oils and vitamin E and stir.
Pour into containers and leave to sit at room temperature until the oils have solidified.
